Writing Hubs Is a Job?

Looking for a job.

Recently I was searching Monster.com, an employment website, for a friend who is looking for a job in the Rochester, N.Y. area. I was perusing the variety of jobs for which he would be qualified when I saw something that looked familiar. I saw an ad for bloggers and writers. I clicked on the ad for more details and was surprised to see that it was an ad for Hubpages.

I must say that the ad was very intriguing and appealing and definitely would spark some interest in a person who was looking for a part time job. At the same time I thought the ad was a bit deceptive. At first reading the description I could see where a person could think he would be writing for a publishing firm and actually getting paid. The add included just about any interest or profession from which a candidate could come from. I could see where an unemployed person needing money would become excited about making money by writing about something of interest to him. At the end of the add there was a truly honest statement saying, "This isn't a job that wil fully support you". How true. When you go to the end of the ad there is a box to click to apply for the job. This takes you to the Hubpages home page and registration form.

I have 3 blogs with Blogger, Retired in Malaysia, Steveso Thinks and Senior Neurons as well as writing Hubs. I must say that I really enjoy writing Hubs, but I also would like to make a little money and increase my readership. I have been writing Hubs for about the same time as I have been writing my Retired in Malaysia blog, but the traffic and money earned is very different. With my blog I have earned about $15 in 6 months, while on Hubpages I have earned $0.93. I find it easier to promote my blogs than it is to promote my Hubs, but they are all hard work. I can spend hours researching ways to promote my entries and come up with nothing. It can be very frustrating spending so much time and effort on my blogs and see no results. There are some days when the readership goes way up and other days when it dies. Many times I have written a piece which I think is great, but when I check the traffic I see little movement and no earnings. I spend a lot of time on keywords, but to no avail. I knew it was not going to be easy and I knew I would not become rich by online writing, but I enjoy it. I cannot view this as a job, but I do view this as my hobby and I will continue to do it, regardless if I get rich or have a huge audience.

I guess my point is that I was a bit disappointed in Hubpages placing their ad on an employment website. There are thousands of people out of work who cannot find jobs and are desperately looking for work. There are also thousands of unscrupulous websites advertising get rich quick schemes, such as working at home or making money online. I was just surprised and saddened to see that Hubpages had lowered themselves to do advertise in this way. I like and respect Hubpages and would recommend it to my friends or anyone who enjoyed expressing themselves, but I would not recommend it for anyone who really needed a job.

The Monster ad is why I'm on hubpages. HP doesn't ask you for money to sign up or anything like that. It's not like one would stop looking for work because they found this ad. In fact, the ad and the site are pretty explicit that you cannot make a huge pile of dough here. I'm thankful for the job ad because I enjoy this site greatly, even if I'll never make my fortune as a writer.

I too have seen advertisements similar to what your article references on sites like Craigslist, for instance. I will admit, I did get involved with one writing site because of such an ad. Naturally, it didn't take me long to realize the money earned was miniscule, at best. I did find one venue that paid me $200.00 within a 3 week period an lo and behold they are no longer in existence. Oh well, I often say, "My luck is so bad, the day my ship comes in I'm going to be at the airport." I look forward to reading more from you.

Thank you. I hope your ship comes in and your plane lands safely.

You make good points here! I noticed the same thing when I was online one day. Also, it was interesting to hear you make more money on your own blog. I will check it out as well. I'm thinking of starting one myself - can you post the same articles on your own blog and on hubpages?

Thanks!

No you can't post the exact same thing on both your blog and your Hubs. You can just change them a little though and that should be okay.
